چکیده

Objective audio quality assessment is an interdisciplinary research area that incorporates audiology and machine learning. Although much work has been made on the machine learning aspect, the audiology aspect also deserves investigation. This thesis proposes a non-intrusive audio quality assessment algorithm, which is based on an auditory model that simulates human auditory system. The auditory model is based on spectro-temporal modulation analysis of spectrogram, which has been proven to be e↵ective in predicting the neural activities of human auditory cortex. The performance of an implementation of the algorithm shows the e↵ectiveness of the spectro-temporal modulation analysis in audio quality assessment.

SNR estimation based on amplitude modulation analysis with applications to noise suppression

A single-microphone noise suppression algorithm is described that is based on a novel approach for the estimation of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in different frequency channels: The input signal is transformed into neurophysiologically-motivated spectro-temporal input features. These patterns are called amplitude modulation spectrograms (AMS), as they contain information of both center freq...

Phoneme Classification Using Temporal Tracking of Speech Clusters in Spectro-temporal Domain

This article presents a new feature extraction technique based on the temporal tracking of clusters in spectro-temporal features space. In the proposed method, auditory cortical outputs were clustered. The attributes of speech clusters were extracted as secondary features. However, the shape and position of speech clusters change during the time. The clusters temporally tracked and temporal tra...

Automatic intelligibility assessment of pathologic speech in head and neck cancer based on auditory-inspired spectro-temporal modulations

Oral, head and neck cancer represents 3% of all cancers in the United States and is the 6th most common cancer worldwide. Depending on the tumor size, location and staging, patients are treated by radical surgery, radiology, chemotherapy or a combination of those treatments. As a result, their anatomical structures for speech are impaired and this leads to some negative impact on their speech i...

A Robust SAR NLFM Waveform Selection Based on the Total Quality Assessment Techniques

Design, simulation and optimal selection of cosine-linear frequency modulation waveform (CNLFM) based on correlated ambiguity function (AF) method for the purpose of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is done in this article. The selected optimum CNLFM waveform in contribution with other waveforms are applied directly into a SAR image formation algorithm (IFA) and their quality effects performance ...

Proceedings of Meetings on Acoustics

We developed a new noise-reduction algorithm based on a joint spectro-temporal representation of signals. The algorithm was inspired by the discovery in our laboratory of higher-level avian auditory cortical neurons that showed invariant responses to communication signals. The algorithm consists of an analysis step and a synthesis step. In the analysis step, the sound is first decomposed into n...
